Hamer Park and Inglewood Oval public art delivered

WA artist Addam, known for blurring the boundaries between jewellery, sculpture and architecture, recently delivered two sculptures based on the shapes and colours of native banksia flowers and orchids.

The redeveloped Moyle Pavilion at Inglewood Oval and Hamer Park Clubrooms were officially opened in April 2022 as the home of the Mount Lawley Inglewood Junior Football Club, the Mount Lawley Inglewood Cricket Club, the Mount Lawley Amateur Football Club and the Perth Baseball Club.

The City commissioned a public artwork to enhance the space surrounding the $6.3 million redevelopment project and awarded the work to Addam.

Addam has previously exhibited at Sculptures by the Sea, delivered artwork for the Crown Towers Epicurean, created jewellery for a Smirnoff international advertising campaign and participated in the international exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art (SOFA) 2011 in New York.

The first of the artworks is known as ‘Ember’ and draws inspiration from the banksia flora, with the pattern of the seeds and the warm colours influencing its design.

The work known as ‘Araa’ is inspired by the elongated and delicate shape of the local spider orchid, intended to convey both the stillness we often experience when out in nature as well as the constant and forward momentum of life in our parks and reserves.

Addam was mentored throughout the delivery of this project by Western Australian artist Rick Vermey. Vermey’s works are some of the most recognisable and ambitious public art installations in Western Australia, most notably the ‘Sky Ribbon’ that adorns the Leach and Tonkin Highway interchange as a gateway to the Perth International Airport.

Having Vermey as a mentor and the support of the City’s Arts team enabled Addam to make a big impact in her first permanent public art commission. The City was pleased to be able to support her career development and this experience will enable her to apply for future commissions. Opportunities such as this are an important step in supporting the development of new talent in the field of public art.

Mayor Mark Irwin said the finished artworks, entitled ‘Araa’ and ‘Ember’, are beautiful and welcome additions to the City’s public art collection.

“In delivering these two works of public art, Addam has made a significant contribution to the City’s collection and the overall amenity of the Hamer Park and Inglewood Oval redevelopment for all to enjoy,” he said.

“I congratulate Addam for these exceptional artworks, and encourage local residents to visit Hamer Park and Inglewood Oval to experience the new artworks for yourself.”

The City of Stirling recognises the State Government’s contribution of $1.3 million towards the Hamer Park Clubrooms and Moyle Pavilion redevelopment project through a State Government election commitment.
