New round of Living Green Schools Fund announced

01 November 2021

The City of Stirling is proud to continue to deliver important seed-funding for schools to achieve sustainability goals under the newest grant round of the Living Green Schools Fund.

From the development of bushland trails and outdoor classrooms, to community recycling hubs, revegetation projects and energy and water reduction, the Living Green Schools Fund has been helping schools achieve their sustainability goals since 2019.

The new round opened on Monday 1 November, with both primary and secondary schools able to apply for up to $5,000 for the planning and development of sustainability projects and activities.

Mayor Mark Irwin said the City recognises that children have a particular passion and interest in seeing meaningful action taken, and as such schools are in a unique position to create change.

“Investing in our children has always been about investing in the future, and investing in the future of our environment is an investment in our children,” he said

“By making sustainability a priority and a part of everyday learning, our young people will be equipped to make positive changes into the future, and we know this is something they themselves are calling for.

“Applications will be open all the way through until 28 February 2022, giving schools the opportunity to develop teaching plans and programs around the proposed projects.

“Past projects have included creating a bush trail, conducting Waste Wise audits, making Eco Bricks, setting up community recycling hubs and plastic waste reduction projects.

“Seven local schools participated in this project last year. This year, there is a total of $50,000 set aside to support grass-roots sustainability initiatives, which will not only make our local community beautiful, but will also teach valuable lessons that we adults are still learning, sometimes the hard way.”

Available across the City of Stirling, the innovative Living Green Schools Fund is in its fourth year, and schools can email sustainability@stirling.wa.gov.au or visit www.stirling.wa.gov.au/livinggreen for more information about the program.
