New collection service makes fundraising easy

01 October 2020

The Innaloo Sportsmen’s Club is one of the first local clubs to sign up for the City’s new Containers for Change collection service.

A great way to fundraise, the new service will be run in conjunction with the State Government’s Containers for Change scheme.

From today, the state-wide scheme offers a 10-cent refund for each eligible can or container returned to refund points, reverse vending machines, bag drops or pop-up refund points.

The City’s new container collection service offers local clubs, schools and businesses lockable 240-litre, 660-litre or 1,100-litre bins that are collected on demand when full.

To make it an easy process, the City’s Waste Team swaps full bins with empty bins and after the eligible containers are counted, refunds are processed electronically.

City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the new service was a win for local clubs, schools, businesses and the environment.

“We have been able to sign up a total of more than 100 schools, businesses and clubs to our collection service prior to the scheme officially kicking off, so that’s an excellent start to boost recycling across the community,” he said.

“The service also helps clubs and schools fundraise for their own programs and projects, so there should be growing interest in the coming weeks and months.”

A popular bowls venue for more than 40 years, the Innaloo Sportsmen's Club plans to reinvest its revenue from recycling back into the club.

Innaloo Sportsmen’s Club President Tammi Yardley said she looked forward to the launch of the service as it would provide “another fundraising avenue” for the club.

“We have about 500 members, and a lot of them are already on board with bringing in their cans and bottles,” she said. “Between club functions, our everyday operations and donations, we should get a good response.”

Along with the collection service, the City will be offering two new Containers for Change refund points in Balcatta from Thursday 1 October.

A new facility opening at 257 Balcatta Road will provide a drive-through location to handover eligible containers and receive on the spot cash refunds. The popular Recycling Centre Balcatta at 238 Balcatta Road will offer an express bag drop-off facility for electronic refunds.

Items accepted for 10-cent refunds include most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard drink containers between 150ml and 3 litres purchased in WA.
