Big bold vision for trackless trams

The City of Stirling has set its sights on a trackless tram system as a critical transport project to drive jobs, strengthen the economy and get people home safer and sooner.

On Monday 9 March, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Michael McCormack MP sent an open letter to local governments throughout Australia seeking assistance in fast tracking the delivery of land transport infrastructure projects on local roads.

The City of Stirling is putting forward its number one priority, the Stirling to Scarborough Trackless Tram. At a cost of $97 million, the proposed route will connect at the Glendalough Train Station and continue 7.5km along Scarborough Beach Road, ultimately linking the Perth CBD to the iconic tourism destination of Scarborough beach.

City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the City had long been advocating and planning for rapid transit solution to connect Glendalough to Scarborough Beach as part of its Stirling City Centre Project.

“Our vision is to implement a cost-effective, rapid transit system from the Stirling City Centre to Scarborough Beach that will ease traffic congestion, unlock major development and create thousands of jobs for the Australian economy,” Mayor Irwin said

A new innovative concept has since been developed using trackless tram technology, which effectively links to other transport modes and boasts a number benefits such as zero emissions, less impact on roads and easing congestion.

“My focus as Mayor is to help the economy thrive in the City of Stirling and it’s important to minimise the impact of infrastructure works that comes with these types of projects, on our local businesses. One of the main advantages of trackless trams is they run on existing roads, so the disruption caused by light rail projects can be avoided.”

In his letter, the Deputy Prime Minister states that “fast-tracking the delivery of critical road projects across Australia is key to driving jobs, strengthening the economy and getting people home safer and sooner.”
Mayor Irwin said that the City’s Trackless Tram delivers all of these requirements and can start immediately.

“We’re currently the only local government in Perth that can deliver trackless trams now - we have all of our planning approvals in place, including a 15 per cent design and all transport modelling complete,”

“If successful, this will be the first trackless tram in Australia and it would be a model for the implementation of this cost-effective technology right across the nation.”

“The Stirling to Scarborough trackless tram delivers the priorities of the Australian Government for innovation, supporting growth and increasing jobs and housing. It is our number one priority and we will continue to work with all levels of government to make it a reality.”
