City wins fourth straight MobileMuster Award

11 June 2020

Another incredible effort from the community to recycle their old mobile phones has won the City its fourth consecutive Top Recycler Award for WA in the annual MobileMuster Local Government Awards.

The City picked up the honour in the 2020 MobileMuster Local Government Awards earlier this month, after taking the title in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

To win the award, the City was successful in collecting the most mobile phones across Western Australian local governments between 1 May 2019 and 30 April 2020. The grand total was a whopping 271kg in discarded mobiles being diverted from landfill.

The community can recycle all brands of phones, batteries, chargers and accessories by dropping them off at the Recycling Centre Balcatta and several other local collection points including the City’s Administration Centre and all six libraries.

Mayor Mark Irwin said everyone across the community should be extremely proud of their recycling efforts, as more than 95 per cent of the materials recovered from old phones and accessories would be used to make new products.

“Year after year, the community does a brilliant job recycling their old mobile phones and for the City to be the top recycler in the state four years in a row is exceptional,” Mayor Irwin said.

“During the past three years, we have been able to collect more than 800kg of old mobile phones thanks to the efforts of our community.”

Introduced in 1998, the MobileMuster program has gone on to collect and recycle close to 1,500 tonnes of mobiles and accessories.

As well as thousands of drop-off points dotted across the country, the program also offers a free post back option for the public to recycle their old phones.

The program is managed by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) on behalf of more than a dozen major handset manufacturers.
