The City of Stirling’s Sunset Veranda 2020 has won Major Event of the Year at the Parks and Leisure Australia (WA) state awards last night.

The category recognises community events that receive third party sponsorship and promote community participation.

Mayor Mark Irwin said the City was thrilled to accept the award for the popular event, which drew record-breaking crowds of 16,500 people from 17 January to 16 February this year.

“Sunset Veranda 2020 is now a multi-award winning event, having also won the Fringe World Independent Program Award in February,” he said.

“With the iconic Scarborough Beach as a backdrop for the event, Sunset Veranda 2020 featured something for everyone, with 105 diverse offerings of cabaret, comedy, music, interactive workshops and family friendly activities and performances.

“We were proud to support 144 local, national and international artists through Sunset Veranda and I’d like to thank all the individuals who helped make it a success, including City staff, event staff, artists, performers and the community who attended this fantastic event.”

Sunset Veranda 2020 will now be considered in the Parks and Leisure Australia national awards later this year.

Last year, the City of Stirling won the category for Community Based Initiative of the Year for its Tree Trail 2019 activation.
