New path to Bennion Dog Beach

07 August 2020

Next time you take a stroll along the coastal path in Trigg, make sure to look for the newly-upgraded set of stairs leading down to the Bennion Dog Beach.

Popular with dog owners, Bennion Dog Beach is one of the few beaches in the City where dogs are permitted.

The former concrete steps have been replaced with a set of 30 stairs with six landings that feature an innovative mix of concrete and composite materials.

Along with installation of the new stairs, the City recently upgraded a section of the adjacent shared path on West Coast Drive – not far from Bailey Street – that connects to the Bennion Dog Beach car park.

The project included demolition of the old concrete path network and concrete stairs along with the construction of the new pathways and stairs, which feature marine grade stainless steel railings. A new dog wash and dog drinking fountain is also in place just off the North Trigg Beach car park.

A small section of timber steps remain in place at the very end of the new stairs leading onto the Bennion Dog Beach. The timber steps will be replaced at the end of their serviceable life.

New configuration of the updated pathways leading to the beach stairs has also allowed for 2,500 new native coastal plants to be added directly around the steps.

The plantings were completed in late July 2020 and were part of a larger restoration effort by dedicated local volunteer group, Stirling Natural Environment and Coastcare (SNEC), who planted an additional 2,000 natives west of the carpark nearby.

The City appreciates the SNEC’s tireless work to support habitat restoration, biodiversity improvement, elimination of invasive species and general aesthetic improvement in the area.

The entire restoration effort was achieved thanks to SNEC, the Perth Region Natural Resource Management (NRM) and a grant from Coastwest, an initiative of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.
