City adopts Homelessness Strategy 2020-2022

14 August 2020

Following Homelessness Prevention Week, the City of Stirling has announced its first ever Homelessness Strategy.

Mayor Mark Irwin the strategy and associated implementation plan represented a turning point for the City by providing a compassionate yet effective response to this social issue in collaboration with the State Government, service providers and the community.

“The Homelessness Strategy 2020-2022 is underpinned by three main principles: prevention and early intervention; engagement, information and support; and building capacity,” he said.

The City’s approach has been informed by reviewing relevant research and reports among local government, industry service providers and aligning with the approach adopted by the State Government through its 10-year strategy on homelessness.

“Within our strategy, we have developed a 12-month Prototype Project, which applies a best practice approach, models of intervention and knowledge in the local City of Stirling context,” Mayor Irwin said.

“This will measure tangible and reportable actions, aiming to make a difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness in the Stirling community.”

The following metrics are among those that will be used to measure the effectiveness of the project:

  • 50 per cent of people experiencing situational homelessness are connected to service providers (currently at less than five per cent)
  • 20 people experiencing situational and episodic homelessness supported to find a home (currently at zero)
  • 30 per cent of people experiencing chronic homelessness with a case management plan (currently at less than five per cent).

The Homelessness Strategy Implementation Plan runs until June 2022. Some of the issues it aims to address include:

  • Recognising triggers that lead to homelessness
  • Ensuring people experiencing homelessness can access information and networks
  • Working as part of a coordinated, multi-agency response.
