Future Joondanna

Joondanna is looking to the future with enduring spirit – a suburb shaped by its history and strength as a close-knit community.
By 2035, its population is forecast to reach 6,346 – a 6% increase that reflects steady growth. With an average age of 37, 83% of households are couple families, and 36% have children. A notable 43% of homes are privately rented, contributing to a diverse and evolving community. Joondanna also has one of the highest rates of residents living with a disability in the City, at 19% – highlighting the importance of inclusive planning.
“We’re working with the community to protect and enhance what makes Joondanna a unique place,” Councillor Teresa Olow said.
“From green spaces to inclusive design, we’re planning for a future that reflects the local needs and values of our residents.”
Moving forward, preparation of a new Local Planning Strategy will set out the intent and objectives for land use planning in response to changes in population, housing, businesses, employment, transport, community facilities and infrastructure.
Joondanna is rated highly for liveability, with 78% of residents satisfied and connectivity noted as a key strength. A sense of belonging is reported by 70%, while a top local focus is creating more green spaces, with tree canopy coverage sitting at 9.3%. The City is exploring land acquisitions to expand public open space.
“Joondanna’s strength lies in its people – a community that values connection, resilience and inclusion,” Councillor Lisa Thornton said.
“It’s a suburb with deep roots and a strong sense of identity.”
