Future Glendalough

23 July 2025

Glendalough is evolving with energy – a suburb where nature, diversity, and connectivity come together to shape a vibrant future.

By 2035, Glendalough’s population is forecast to reach 3,263 – a 12% increase that signals its role in the City’s evolving urban landscape. With an average age of 34, 84% of households are couple families and 38% have children. A significant 36% of homes are privately rented, and 57% of residents live in flats or apartments – contributing to a dynamic and accessible housing mix. Glendalough also holds the distinction of having the highest proportion of residents born overseas in the City, at 67%, making it one of Stirling’s most culturally rich communities.

To cater for this growth, urban transformation in Glendalough presents an opportunity to create a more connected, sustainable, and liveable suburb. Encouraging more people to live closer to jobs and transport delivers better amenities, more diverse housing options, and safer, greener streets.

Moving forward, preparation of a new Local Planning Strategy will set out the intent and objectives for land use planning in response to changes in population, housing, businesses, employment, transport, community facilities and infrastructure.

“Glendalough’s diversity is its strength – and its future will be shaped by the people who call it home,” Councillor Lisa Thornton said.

“It’s a suburb where nature and community go hand in hand.”

Liveability in Glendalough is rated positively, with 78% of residents satisfied with life in the area. Connectivity stands out as a top-performing attribute. A strong 70% of residents report a sense of belonging, while crime prevention and waste management have been identified as key local issues for future consideration. The suburb’s tree canopy coverage currently sits at 17.2%.

“We’re always a voice for our residents,” Councillor Teresa Olow said.

“From safety to sustainability, our focus is on supporting Glendalough’s growth in ways that reflect its values.”
