Last update date: 18 February 2026

The intersection at Jon Sanders Drive, Powis Street and Harborne Street is set to undergo a major upgrade to address community concerns about pedestrian and vehicle safety.

Main Roads WA, the City of Stirling and the Town of Cambridge have collaborated to plan this significant project, which aims to enhance safety for both vehicles and pedestrians and improve traffic flow.

The project elements and benefits are:

  • New red/green pedestrian crossing lights on all approaches: Making it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross
  • Additional lanes: Extra lanes on Jon Sanders Drive and Powis Street will help reduce congestion and improve efficiency
  • Improved turning lanes: Dedicated turning lanes on Jon Sanders Drive and Harborne Street will make turning movements smoother and safer
  • Updated traffic signals: Implementing a "double diamond" phasing system and modern traffic signals will enhance intersection efficiency
  • New shared path: Constructing a 3-metre-wide shared path will connect Rawlins Street to the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path, improving access for people walking and riding.

The project is primarily funded the through the State Metropolitan Regional Roads Group (MRRG) Road Improvement grants program, with two thirds contributed by MRRG. The remaining third will be shared equally between the Town of Cambridge and the City of Stirling. Formal approval of funding is expected in August 2026. Once approved, construction will begin in 2026/2027.
