Recognising the Stirling volunteers who connect our community

22 May 2025

“I just feel happy, and it gives me inner happiness to volunteer and help out people.”

The City of Stirling is recognising the valuable contributions of the more than 300 City of Stirling volunteers during National Volunteer Week 2025, which runs from Monday 19 May to Sunday 25 May.

This year’s theme, ‘Connecting Community’, reflects the essential role volunteers play in supporting residents and strengthening local networks.

The City is proud that more than 70 per cent of the volunteers live within the community. In the past year, they have contributed nearly 35,000 hours across over 30 roles that directly benefit the community.

Volunteers are involved in delivering a wide range of essential services, including community transport for seniors and people with disabilities, aged care visitation, food and book deliveries, digital mentoring at libraries, support for craft workshops, resume assistance for migrants, and environmental programs.

Satish Kumar, a Digital Mentor at Stirling Libraries – Osborne, said volunteering provides connection.

“For me, I take it that volunteering is an opportunity to connect with people, connect with the organisation,” Satish said.

“I just feel happy, and it gives me inner happiness to volunteer and help out people.”

Deanna Parkinson, who volunteers with her sister as a driver for Stirling Food Services, said her role provides meaning and personal reward.

“Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose. One that has enriched my life more than any previous employment,” Deanna said.

“Doing it with my sister is fun. I’ve said to plenty of people who ask me – it’s like presents at Christmas times. The joy is in the giving.”

The City is currently seeking volunteers for the Community Transport and Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme programs, which are essential in helping isolated or vulnerable residents remain connected and supported.
