Greeting other dogs the right way

10 April 2026
Not every dog wants to say hello, and that’s okay. Safe dog‑to‑dog greetings help prevent stress, fear, and unexpected reactions.
Here’s how to set your dog up for positive interactions:
- Ask before approaching. Always check with the other owner first
- Watch body language. Loose posture, soft eyes and relaxed tails are good signs. Stiff bodies or tucked tails mean it’s best to give space
- Keep the lead loose. A tight lead can create tension and make dogs feel trapped
- Keep greetings short. A quick sniff and then a gentle redirection helps prevent overstimulation
- Don’t force it. If either dog looks unsure, calmly move away and continue your walk.
Respecting boundaries helps build safer dog‑friendly spaces for everyone.
