City of Stirling CEO Stevan Rodic has congratulated Mayor Mark Irwin on his election as President of the Western Australian Local Government Association, describing it as a “fantastic result for the sector”.
Mayor Irwin, the longest serving Mayor of the state’s largest local government, was elected President of WALGA at this afternoon’s WALGA State Council meeting in Perth.
He succeeds outgoing WALGA President Karen Chappel AM, who served in the role from 2022 to 2026 and remains the Shire of Morawa President.
“Mark will be an effective advocate for the local government sector and a strong voice for communities right across WA,” Mr Rodic said.
“He’s made a big impact at Stirling because he genuinely cares about the community and he’s not afraid to speak up on their behalf and challenge the status quo.
"I’ve seen his leadership style first-hand and he’s great at bringing people together and explaining things in a commonsense way to get the right outcome.”
A former President of the Surf Life Saving Association WA, Mayor Irwin was first elected Mayor of the City of Stirling in 2017, earning re-election in 2019 and 2023.
He has led the City through a period of significant growth and earned individual recognition along the way, including WALGA’s Eminent Service Award and the Planning Institute of Australia WA’s Planning Champion Award.
“Mark is a very capable spokesperson, he’s passionate about local government and he’s the right choice for this role," Mr Rodic said.
“It’s an honour for us to have our Mayor representing the whole sector and we look forward to continuing to work with him during an exciting time for our City.”
