City monitoring algal blooms at lakes

The City of Stirling is monitoring algal blooms at Jackadder Lake, Lake Gwelup and Talia Lake.
The presence of blue-green algal blooms at Jackadder Lake and Lake Gwelup was suspected in late December 2025 and confirmed by laboratory test results last week.
The City erected warning signs around both lakes last week, urging the community to avoid contact with the affected water and to keep their dogs on a leash to prevent accidental exposure.
Additional precautionary testing of other City lakes this week revealed a blue-green algal bloom at Talia Lake in Stirling.
Blue-green algal blooms are capable of producing toxins and are treated as potentially harmful, in line with advice of the WA Department of Health.
Algal blooms are generally caused by a combination of excess nutrients, high temperatures and slow-moving water.
A series of long, hot summer has put wetlands across Perth under significant pressure.
The City will be undertaking ongoing water sampling and monitoring at the affected lakes as advised by the WA Department of Health, until the water quality is consistent with national guidelines.
