The City of Stirling proudly recognises the 40th anniversary of the Friends of Star Swamp Bushland, an inspiring milestone in local environmental stewardship.

Since their formation in 1985, the Friends of Star Swamp Bushland have been at the heart of efforts to protect and promote the Star Swamp Bushland Reserve, a 96-hectare natural sanctuary in Perth’s northern suburbs. Their work has helped preserve one of the region’s most ecologically and culturally significant bushland areas.

The reserve is home to over 200 native plant species, 80 bird species, and a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fungi. It holds deep cultural significance, with evidence of use by local Nyoongar people for hunting, gathering, and crafting. Historical uses of the land have ranged from timber and farming to military and recreational purposes.

The Friends of Star Swamp Bushland group emerged from a passionate grassroots campaign in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the area faced the threat of urban development. Local residents, supported by scientists, artists, and politicians, rallied to protect the land. Their efforts led to the reserve’s official designation in 1987 as an A-Class reserve and its later recognition as a Bush Forever site.

Today, the Friends of Star Swamp Bushland continue to lead conservation activities such as guided walks, weed removal, and habitat restoration. Their work not only protects biodiversity but also fosters community connection and environmental awareness.

The Friends of Star Swamp marked the 40-year occasion with a morning tea on Saturday 31 May at the Henderson Environmental Centre. City councillors, City staff, fellow volunteers, friends, family and members of the community all gathered to acknowledge the history and many achievements of this collaborative community effort in conservation.
