Upcoming site investigations in Stirling

20 June 2025

These investigations are essential to assess ground conditions related to the site’s previous use as a landfill.

The City of Stirling is undertaking detailed site and geotechnical investigations at the following locations in Stirling:

  • Hertha North Reserve
  • Stirling Civic Gardens
  • Civic Place, Elton Place, Telford Crescent and Newcomen Road.

These investigations are essential to assess ground conditions related to the site’s previous use as a landfill. The findings will inform future remediation efforts and potential uses.

Activity at the site may include sampling of soil, groundwater and gas condition using mobile drilling rigs, excavators and other testing equipment. All activity will be carried out in accordance with environmental and safety standards.

The investigations are expected to occur according to the following schedule:

  • 3 June – 30 September 2025: Ground and geotechnical investigations at Stirling Civic Gardens and Hertha North Reserve.
  • 23 June – 7 July 2025: Installation of monitoring wells to test ground gases on City verges along Civic Place, Elton Place, Telford Crescent and Newcomen Road.

The testing on City verges will involve installing shallow monitoring wells (up to 2m deep and 75mm wide) using a low-impact hand auger device. This approach will ensure minimal rectification works are required to return City verges to their previous condition.

The wells will be periodically tested using a handheld gas meter for 12 weeks after installation, with each test taking approximately 30 minutes. They will be capped with a lockable standpipe cover 0.5m above the ground until the completion of the monitoring, when they will be removed.

Any questions regarding these investigations can be directed to the City Future team on (08) 9205 8342 or email cityfutureprojects@stirling.wa.gov.au.
