Two new pedestrian crossings coming to West Coast Drive

On Tuesday night, City of Stirling Council approved the installation of raised crossings at North Beach Road in North Beach and Lynn Street in Trigg.

The decision came after a report on the safety benefits of three pedestrian crossings installed on West Coast Drive in late 2024.

Those three crossings – at Elsie Street in Watermans Bay, Saunders Street in North Beach and Bennion Street in Trigg – were accompanied by a speed limit reduction from 50km/h to 40km/h.

The report showed that the safety measures led to a 33 per cent drop in annual crashes and a 10 per cent drop in average speeds in 2025.

At the same time, traffic volumes were unchanged, indicating that the safety measures had not stopped people taking the scenic route along West Coast Drive.

The additional pedestrian crossings approved on Tuesday night were the two left over from the original list of five proposed locations.

During consultation for the five proposed locations, the community ranked North Beach Road as the highest priority of the five, while Lynn Street was ranked third. 

Now that Council has approved the project, it will be listed for consideration in the City’s draft annual budget for 2027/28, with an estimated total cost of $150,000.
