Opened on Doric Street in April 2019, General Public was built around a simple idea: a place where people could grab a coffee, share a pizza, enjoy a drink with friends and feel genuinely welcome. Whether it's families with young children, dog owners, groups of friends or couples catching up after work, the venue was designed to be a space for everyone.
"We wanted to create the local we wanted in our own neighbourhood," the team explains.
"Somewhere people could come together and feel like they belonged."
With Wembley Downs home for their family, the team knew and loved the area and wanted to build something close by that they would enjoy visiting with their own children.
The Doric Street corner felt like the right fit – a neighbourhood spot where people could bump into someone they know and stay longer than planned.
From sourdough starter to Scarborough staple
Inspired by pizza nights with family and friends, the team's sourdough starter became the foundation for what is now one of General Public's signature menu favourites. Today, that same starter is still nurtured and used in the kitchen every day.
While sourdough remains at the heart of the menu, the business believes its biggest point of difference is the people it serves.
The name General Public reflects the venue's commitment to inclusivity, creating a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through the door.
"There are no VIPs and no pretence. We simply want to be a great local venue for everyone."
Giving back to the place they call home
Over the years, the business has supported local schools, sporting clubs, charities and community groups through sponsorships, fundraising initiatives and community partnerships. The team is particularly proud of its long-standing relationships with Ocean Heroes, Wembley Downs Junior Football Club and Scarborough Junior Football Club.
Initiatives such as Local Legends reflect that approach, supporting the people and groups that help shape the local community.
They are also committed to making sustainable choices wherever possible, from composting food waste and reducing single-use packaging to supporting local coastal clean-up initiatives.
For the team, being part of Scarborough means more than operating a venue. It's about backing the people, clubs and causes that help make the area feel connected.
Adapting through hospitality's toughest moments
Transforming a former pool supplies shop into a thriving hospitality venue was the first hurdle. Less than a year after opening, the COVID-19 pandemic created further uncertainty across the industry.
They adapted by focusing on takeaway pizza and bread services, helping keep both customers and staff connected during a difficult period.
More recently, rising operating costs and workforce pressures have tested the industry, but the team has stayed focused on what matters most.
"Look after your people, know your numbers and don't compromise on the product or experience."
The team also acknowledges the support received through the City's Grants program, which has helped bring some of their community events to life.
Lessons from a local favourite
"Get involved in your community early and give first."
Their advice is simple: build genuine relationships, give before you expect anything back and stay close to the people who support your business.
"The strongest partnerships are the ones that go beyond a transaction."
They also emphasise the importance of staying true to what your business does best, maintaining a strong team culture and backing yourself through the highs and harder moments of running a business.
Today, General Public remains a much-loved Scarborough destination, known for sourdough pizzas, relaxed hospitality and a strong connection to its local area.
