Record-breaking Free Trees and Plants giveaway to make our neighbourhoods greener

01 April 2026

The City of Stirling’s Free Trees and Plants giveaway is spreading its roots further across the City than ever before, with a record number of residents signing up for a record number of trees and plants.

Now in its eighth year, the giveaway aims to counter tree canopy loss on private land and create greener, cooler and more waterwise neighbourhoods.

This year’s giveaway opened to registrations on Wednesday last week and was fully subscribed within just three days.

Almost 3,000 households are set to share in 36,285 trees and native plants, a growth of 20 per cent on the previous year.

City experts curate the species list to provide a range of climate-adaptable trees and plants that not only look good but also provide food and habitat for native wildlife.

Residents were able to apply for up to four trees and one plant pack containing 10 native waterwise plants.

They will collect their trees and plants from the City’s Henderson Environmental Centre in North Beach on set dates throughout April and May.

“Our tree canopy has been hovering at around 12 per cent for over a decade, despite significant canopy growth on City land,” Mayor Mark Irwin said.

“This annual giveaway is one way we can add to our urban canopy on residential land, so it’s fantastic to see it gaining popularity every year.”
