New Native Plant Guide now available

09 February 2026

The City has launched a new Native Plant Guide, giving residents an easy way to plan their waterwise garden using local native species.

The guide is available online as an easy-to-read flipbook.

Created in partnership with South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL), this new resource helps residents to:

  • Select native plants suited to local soil and climate
  • Plan water-efficient garden layouts
  • Reduce lawn areas to save water and maintenance
  • Create habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife
  • Prepare for autumn planting when conditions are optimal.

SERCUL is an independent Natural Resource Management organisation that brings together community, business and government to improve the health of waterways and ecosystems across Perth’s southern region.

By partnering with SERCUL, the City has ensured that the guide reflects local species, local soils and local habitat needs, giving residents confidence that the plants they select will thrive in the City of Stirling’s unique local conditions.

Residents can use the guide to explore native plants suited to their suburb, understand local growing conditions and design low-maintenance landscapes that support biodiversity.

The guide also includes a helpful legend for bee, butterfly, bird and even black cockatoo attracting plants, making it easier for residents to choose species that support local biodiversity and thrive in our local climate.

To support verge transformations, the City also provides a step-by-step instructional video on creating a native, waterwise verge.

This video complements the guide and is ideal for residents planning to remove lawn, add native species or refresh their garden design before the cooler months.
