Intersection Upgrade Project set to enhance safety and traffic flow

The intersection of Jon Sanders Drive, Powis Street and Harborne Street in Glendalough/Wembley is set to undergo a major upgrade to address community concerns about pedestrian and vehicle safety.
Main Roads WA, the City of Stirling and the Town of Cambridge have collaborated to plan this significant project aimed at enhancing safety for vehicles and pedestrians and improving traffic flow.
The project will be primarily funded through the State Metropolitan Regional Roads Group (MRRG) Road Improvement grants program, with two-thirds coming from MRRG and the remaining third split equally between the Town of Cambridge and the City of Stirling.
The project elements and benefits are:
- New pedestrian crossing lights on all approaches: Making it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross
- Additional lanes: Adding lanes on Jon Sanders Drive and Powis Street to improve efficiency and reduce congestion
- Improved turning lanes: Providing dedicated turning lanes on Jon Sanders Drive and Harborne Street to make turning movements smoother and safer
- Updated traffic signals: Implementing a "double diamond" phasing system and installing modern traffic signals for better efficiency
- New shared path: Constructing a 3-metre wide shared path connecting Rawlins Street to the Mitchell Freeway PSP (principal shared path) for improved pedestrian and cyclist access.
Approval of the project MRRG grant funding is expected in December 2025 and once approved the project is expected to commence construction 2026/27.
