A $16 million upgrade to Recycling Centre Balcatta will make trips to the facility quicker and safer by separating residential and commercial waste services.

Opened in 1979, the City of Stirling’s Recycling Centre Balcatta offers services for the disposal of recyclables, green waste, household hazardous waste, car tyres and general waste.

It also hosts the Balcatta Recycling Shop, proudly managed by disability services provider Workpower in partnership with the City.

Having a recycling centre of its own allows the City and its ratepayers to save time and money while supporting responsible waste management.

However, the ageing facility requires significant improvements to provide the community with a modern and environmentally sustainable waste management service.

City of Stirling Council last night accepted a tender for the design and construction of upgrades which will improve efficiency, access and user experience.

The waste transfer station will undergo a major expansion, including the construction of a new fully enclosed waste transfer shed that will double its capacity and allow the City to separate residential and commercial services.

Waste trucks and other commercial vehicles will enter the facility from a new entrance on Natalie Way, while residential access will continue from Balcatta Road.

The new commercial service will include two weighbridges, a weighbridge office, a crib room, heavy vehicle washdown bays and a sweeper tailings pit.

The existing waste receival structure will be partially retained and refurbished, with new cladding, steelwork upgrades and a canopy connecting it to the new facility.

The project will also include works related to parking, asphalting, utilities, security, landscaping and more.

“Our Waste team does a great job of providing a comprehensive waste management and recycling service, but Recycling Centre Balcatta is in need of upgrades,” Mayor Irwin said.

“Separating commercial and residential services will be a key step in transforming it into the first-rate facility our community deserves.

“This project will make trips to the recycling centre easier for mums and dads who won't have to sit in queues behind trucks when they’re trying to do the right thing with their waste.”

Recycling Centre Balcatta will remain operational during construction, which is expected to start in mid-2026 and be completed by 2027.
