City of Stirling raises community concerns over proposed Innaloo post office closure

The City of Stirling Council has called for Federal Government support regarding the proposed closure of the Australia Post office at Westfield Innaloo.
The post office has been a fixture of the community since it opened in 1967 and continues to play an important role, servicing residents living in nearby aged care and retirement villages due to its strong public transport links and co-location with retail, banking, health and community services.
Australia Post is planning to close the outlet on Friday 23 October 2026, with public reporting citing declining use in recent years and financial losses.
The nearest post offices are around 2km away in Morris Place, Innaloo, Osborne Park and Woodlands.
In September, Doubleview Ward Councillor Elizabeth Re submitted a proposed notice of motion for the City to lobby the Federal Government to retain the post office.
In response to the notice of motion, Mayor Mark Irwin AM wrote to the Federal Ministers who oversee Australia Post calling for their support in opposing the closure and retaining an accessible postal service presence in the local area.
Mayor Irwin also wrote to the CEO of Australia Post asking for clarity on the grounds of the proposed closure and questioning whether the needs of the community had been fully considered, particularly the needs of older residents, people living with disability and those who rely on public transport.
He pointed to significant future population and employment growth within the Stirling City Centre as a key reason to maintain accessible postal services in the area.
Mayor Irwin asked the Australia Post CEO to outline the accessibility and transition arrangements that will be provided to affected customers if the closure cannot be avoided.
