Be prepared for extreme heat this summer

24 December 2025

As we get deeper into summer and the temperature continues to rise, the risk of a heatwave increases.

A heatwave is a period of unusually hot weather in an area that lasts three days or more.

Heat puts stress on our bodies and hot nights make it harder to recover.

Extreme heat can be dangerous. Here are some essential tips to stay safe this summer:

  • Stay hydrated – drink 2-3L of water daily, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Avoid fizzy, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks
  • Dress for summer – choose lightweight, light-coloured clothing to keep cool
  • Check on those at risk – check in on the elderly, sick or vulnerable people in your life twice a day. Keep an eye on children
  • Minimise sun exposure – stay out of the sun where possible. If you must go out, wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Prepare your home – service your air conditioner early. Use curtains and blinds to keep rooms cool
  • Make use of cool spaces – if you don’t have air conditioning, visit community centres, libraries, shopping centres or cinemas
  • Remember your pets – provide shade and plenty of cool water
  • Seek help if needed:

Stay safe and look out for each other this summer.
