The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are set to return to Western Australia in 2028, with one of Australia’s largest – and most celebrated – sporting events to be hosted at Scarborough Beach.
The return of the iconic event in 2028 is expected to once again deliver significant benefits to WA’s economy while showcasing the state’s world-class coastline and iconic beaches to competitors, officials, supporters and spectators from across Australia.
The event – affectionately known as "the Aussies" – remains the pinnacle of the surf life saving calendar, with more than 9,000 volunteer surf lifesavers, officials and spectators from across the country expected to travel to WA to compete in nine days of hard-fought competition.
Featuring more than 550 events across the Youth, Masters and Open age categories, the Aussies brings together competitors from clubs nationwide to contest national titles.
The 2028 Aussies will be held from March 25 to April 2, 2028, and spectators are encouraged to come down and witness Australia’s best surf lifesaving athletes competing in a thrilling mix of beach and ocean events, including surf races, board races, ski races, beach sprints, and rescue simulations.
The championships will offer an exciting atmosphere that showcases elite athleticism, teamwork, and surf rescue skills against the backdrop of WA’s iconic coastline.
The event will mark Western Australia’s return as host after successfully staging the event in 2023, delivering a significant economic and tourism boost to the region, generating millions of dollars for the local economy.
The City of Stirling is a proud partner of Surf Life Saving Australia in the delivery of the event.
Surf Life Saving Australia CEO Adam Weir said:
“The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are the pinnacle event on our sporting calendar and one of the most important times of year for our members, bringing together thousands of volunteers from clubs across the country.
“Western Australia has a proud history of hosting the Championships, and we’re looking forward to returning to Perth in 2028 following the success of the event in 2023. We know the competitors, officials, volunteers and supporters will once again enjoy the state’s world-class beaches and warm hospitality.
“Beyond the competition, the Aussies are a celebration of the commitment, skill and service of our volunteer surf lifesavers.
“The Championships are an opportunity to recognise the dedication of our members who have spent the season keeping our beaches safe and provide a time for the movement to come together, connect and celebrate our shared purpose.
“We look forward to working closely with the Western Australian Government, Tourism WA and our event partners to deliver an exceptional Championships in 2028.”
Premier Roger Cook said:
“The return of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships to Western Australia in 2028 is fantastic news for our State, with the event set to provide a significant boost to our visitor economy while also showcasing Western Australia’s spectacular coastline to a national audience.
“Scarborough and Trigg Beaches are true gems, offering an ideal setting for competitors, spectators and the wider surf life saving community, and I’m excited to welcome them back to Perth for what promises to be a memorable event.”
City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin AM said:
“Surf lifesaving is an iconic part of Australian culture with benefits that reach far beyond the beach.
“It promotes an active lifestyle and teaches young Australians discipline, teamwork, selflessness and the value of volunteering.
“The Aussies are the pinnacle of surf lifesaving in this country and we look forward to welcoming them back to Scarborough Beach – the home of the Aussies in WA.”
