‘Laney’s Lookout’ to honour the legacy of local surfing legend Mark Lane

A local legend, Mr Lane grew up in Woodlands, attended Churchlands Senior High School, taught at Carine Senior High School and spent a total of 22 years as the CEO of Surfing WA in Trigg.

In between separate stints as the head of Surfing WA, he served as Surfing Australia CEO from 2006 to 2009, becoming a life member of both organisations.

Mr Lane passed away last weekend after a long battle with cancer, leaving an enduring legacy of passion and commitment across Australian surfing.

His passing sparked an outpouring of tributes from star surfers, the wider sporting community and health organisations that acknowledged his significant advocacy for skin cancer prevention and mental health.

“Anyone who met Mark Lane would know that he was a special person – generous with his time, kind, caring and very capable,” City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin AM said.

“He made an incredible contribution to surfing right throughout this state and beyond, from growing the grassroots to developing the sport at its highest levels.

“Laney was one of a kind and we stand by his family and the WA surfing community in their loss.”

Mayor Irwin gave a public tribute to Mr Lane at Tuesday night’s Council meeting, describing him as a true gentleman, great athlete and fantastic contributor.

Among his many contributions to surfing across WA, Mr Lane was integral to the development of the new Surfing WA headquarters at Trigg Beach.

The City plans to commemorate his contribution to surfing and the local community through Laney’s Lookout, opposite Surfing WA headquarters. 

This Friday and Saturday night, the City will illuminate the Scarborough Clock Tower in oceanic colours of blue, teal and white to acknowledge the significance of Surfing WA and the surfing community.

Mr Lane’s funeral service will take place at 2.45pm on Friday and can be viewed via livestream.

Surfing WA has invited the community to gather at Sunset Hill at Scarborough Beach at 8.00am this Saturday for a paddle-out in Mr Lane’s honour.
