Meet the newly refreshed Wandjoo Maar | Welcome Hand – officially renamed by Wadjak Nyoongar artist Kylie Graham.

Situated near the entrance to Stirling Leisure – Scarborough Beach, this iconic sculpture has just had a full clean, refurbishment and now features a new plaque sharing its rich cultural story.

The hand represents the casting of sand, a traditional Wadjak gesture of welcome that invites visitors to show respect by throwing sand into the water for the spirits, ancestors and the Waugyl, while recognising they are on Wadjak Nyoongar Country.

On the wrist, you’ll find a dolphin and fish, honouring how dolphins once guided fish inland, helping Nyoongar families gather food.

A place of connection, respect and storytelling, Wandjoo Maar is a reminder that everyone is welcome and to tread thoughtfully. Stop by, take a moment, and experience the story for yourself.
