Spotlight on Stirling: Kinkaya Urgent Care & GP

WA’s first clinic purpose-built for kids and young adults.

Kinkaya was born out of personal experience. As parents, Drs Smriti Shah, Justin Withnall and Chris Peyton had been on the other side of paediatric healthcare with their own kids – and walked away too often feeling that the care could have been better. Calmer. More patient. Less rushed. They recognised that many families were looking for an alternative option for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries, particularly outside normal business hours.
The result is Kinkaya: a clinic purpose-built for kids and young adults, staffed by clinicians with emergency department backgrounds and paediatric-trained nurses, delivering urgent care, general practice and on-site imaging under one roof.
“The promise we built the business around is the one we’d want for our own families: care like family.”
A location chosen for families
Innaloo sits at the centre of a young-family catchment with limited after-hours paediatric options. The suburb has good arterial access from Scarborough, Karrinyup, Doubleview and Stirling, and north through to Joondalup and proximity to allied health and imaging partners. The site itself supports the clinical footprint Kinkaya needed – consulting rooms plus on-site X-ray – and offers free on-site parking, which matters when you’re getting a sick or injured child out of the car.
End-to-end care in a single visit
Kinkaya is the first facility of its kind in Western Australia. Urgent care and general practice in one place, with on-site X-ray (including weekends) and on-site pathology, staffed by GPs with emergency department backgrounds and paediatric-trained nurses, with access to paediatric specialist support. Walk-in care, no appointment required, open 8.00am to 10.00pm daily.
Kinkaya holds its own GP roster rather than leasing rooms to an external practice, which allows care to be coordinated end-to-end. A child with a suspected fracture can be assessed, imaged and managed in one visit, with referral pathways into paediatric subspecialty care where needed.
Overcoming challenges as a new healthcare service
Like many healthcare providers, Kinkaya has faced challenges in recruiting and maintaining a strong GP workforce within a competitive Western Australian market.
In response, the team has developed a targeted recruitment approach, including a strong founder presence on LinkedIn, direct outreach and referral-based engagement. The clinic’s flexible model also allows GPs to work across both urgent care and general practice streams, supporting retention and adaptability.
As a new private service operating outside the traditional emergency department system, building awareness has also been a key focus. The clinic has prioritised relationships with referrers, digital engagement and word-of-mouth to ensure local families can easily find and access their services.
Advice for other local businesses
The founders of Kinkaya offer two clear lessons from their experience:
- Build the operating system before you build the marketing. Get rostering, clinical governance and a single source of truth for tasks and decisions in place before pushing acquisition – it’s what keeps the business stable through inevitable staffing changes
- Pick your B2B relationships deliberately. For a clinic, the GPs, allied-health practices and specialists in your catchment matter more than any single ad campaign.
Kinkaya is located at 17 Wotan Street, Innaloo WA 6018.
The Urgent Care Clinic is open 8.00am to 10.00pm daily. General Practice appointments are available 8.00am to 5.00pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Walk-ins welcome.
