Coastal Conversations at Mettams Pool

01 March 2023

On Wednesday morning, City staff and Coastal Ward Councillor Felicity Farrelly had a ‘coastal conversation’ with residents and beachgoers at the lookout over Mettams Pool to chat about the ongoing gazebo works and replacement options for the water access ramp.

Because of its inshore reef and pool, Mettams Pool is uniquely placed as one of the most accessible safe bathing areas along the City of Stirling coastline, particularly for children and families.

This is part of the reason why the local and wider community are always so interested in the future of the City’s iconic locations like Mettams Pool and the ongoing impact of coastal erosion along our coastline.

This morning the conversation was focused on the next stage of redevelopment, with two design options presented for the new water access ramp, which was removed in late 2021 due to significant damage.

The new ramp will extend out from the gazebo structure which is currently under repair with works to the due to be completed by the end of March. The City is preparing an application for funding from the State Government to ensure the new water access ramp is delivered next financial year.

To meet the broader challenges of coastal erosion and address community concerns, we released our draft Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Planning (CHRMAP) report, which highlights the state of the City’s coastline based on the latest scientific data.

The CHRMAP process included public consultation where members of the public, like you, shared the places and coastal assets they loved the most and their experiences of the change along our coastline.

These ‘coastal conversations’ will continue and help decide what solutions are best for the community to preserve some of the most incredible natural assets that the City has to offer.
