We, the undersigned, do respectfully request that the Council pass a motion calling on the Australian Government to:

1. Establish a national Climate Compensation Fund, funded by a levy on major coal, oil and gas export corporations; and

2. Provide sustained funding from the Fund to councils and communities for climate adaptation, disaster preparedness and recovery, and resilience.

Reasons:

The City of Stirling has identified climate risks including hotter days, water scarcity, severe storms, coastal erosion, bushfire risk and tree canopy loss. These risks are placing growing demands on local infrastructure and services. We believe major fossil fuel corporations should contribute to the costs communities face, rather than leaving residents, businesses and ratepayers to shoulder them.
