The City has completed the detailed design of the Hutton Street extension through to Walters Drive (Stage 1) and is progressing planning and procurement for construction.

Background

On 5 January 2018, Amendment 1291/41 to the Metropolitan Region Scheme was gazetted which reserved land for an extension of Hutton Street from Scarborough Beach Road through to Jon Sanders Drive.

The City undertook an investigation into the feasibility of extending the road in either one stage directly to Jon Sanders Drive, or in two stages being initially to Walters Drive and then finally to Jon Sanders Drive. The Western Australian Planning Commission also acquired the land required for the extension to Walters Drive.

The extension of Hutton Street aims to improve traffic flow in the area by reducing congestion on Scarborough Beach Road and other roads in the immediate network. Hutton Street will play an increasingly important role in the transportation of freight between Osborne Park and the broader region.

In June 2024, the road south of Scarborough Beach Road was renamed Mineral Road. Please refer to the map below for the extent of Mineral Road.

Project update (May 2026)

The detailed design for Stage 1 has now been completed and was endorsed by Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) through the Traffic Signal Approval Policy (TSAP) process.

The City is progressing procurement for construction while awaiting the outcome of the funding application through the MRWA’s Metropolitan Regional Road Group (MRRG) process, expected in July 2026.

The timing for construction and opening of the road remains subject to funding contributions from the State Government.
