A major renewal of Recycling Centre Balcatta is underway to deliver a faster and safer experience for the community.

Customers are advised to expect delays as the essential upgrades are carried out over the next 18 months, with major civil works starting in August.

Opened in 1979, the ageing facility needs significant improvements to ensure it can provide an efficient and environmentally sustainable waste management service.

The focal point of the renewal will be a new, fully enclosed waste transfer shed which will double the capacity of the waste transfer station.

Another key change will be the separation of residential and commercial traffic, made possible by the new waste transfer shed and the construction of additional weighbridges.

The overall customer experience will be enhanced by landscaping, modernised facilities and accessibility improvements.

From August, civil works will significantly impact operations, leading to longer queues and wait times.

To help manage demand, the centre is now open from 7.00am on weekdays, including the cardboard and metals recyclables areas.

Other recyclables sections and the Balcatta Recycling Shop will continue to open from 7.30am on weekdays.

From Wednesday 1 July, fridges and air conditioners can be dropped in the recyclables area without needing to go over the weighbridge.

"Having our own recycling centre means the City and our residents can save time and money while supporting responsible waste management," City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin AM said.

"These upgrades are an important step in future-proofing the centre, but there’s no doubt we are going to see some delays while they are carried out.

"My main advice for our residents would be to take advantage of the range of on-demand waste collection services we offer and to check our website for updates before visiting the centre."

Customers are also encouraged to attend the centre during quieter periods where possible – such as before 11.00am on weekdays – and explore other waste and recycling options.
