Stephenson Avenue Extension 2023 wrap up

21 December 2023

As 2023 comes to a conclusion, the jointly-funded $165 million Stephenson Avenue Extension project from the Australian Government and WA Government is now more than 35 per cent complete.

The project site will be closed from Friday 22 December 2023, reopening on Monday 8 January 2024. Although no work will occur during this time, the site will be monitored and exposed sandy areas will be treated with dust suppressant.

In early 2024, the Stephenson Avenue Interchange Bridge and the Stirling Station Bus Interchange Bridge will be ‘launched’ over Mitchell Freeway. Segments of the bridges are currently being poured into moulds, before being pushed out in sections as the concrete cures.

S2ME Alliance who are delivering the project have released a video summarising some of the key milestones achieved this year, including:

  • Significant concrete pours have been completed for bridge piers and bridge abutments along the Mitchell Freeway
  • Piling on the eastern and western sides of the Stephenson Avenue Interchange Bridge and the Stirling Station Bus Interchange Bridge is now complete
  • A rolling series of roadworks along Cedric Street and the Mitchell Freeway have been delivered to maintain vehicle and pedestrian access, and these will continue over the coming months.

To watch the video, visit the Main Roads WA Youtube channel.

When complete, the project will provide a new connection from Scarborough Beach Road to Cedric Street, including a new grade-separated interchange with the Mitchell Freeway to replace the existing Cedric Street interchange, and local road links to Ellen Stirling Boulevard.

The Stephenson Avenue Extension is a key element of the City’s vision for the Stirling City Centre and once complete in late 2024, it will provide an important connection and facilitate further public and private infrastructure projects to activate the area.
