Yokine Regional Open Space – New Public Toilets

Following Community feeback to better cater for user needs the City is planning to install a new toilet facility closer to the playspace. A sketch design and floorplan is now available. Closing date: 4 December 2023

In 2022, over 4 weeks throughout October and November, the City asked the community for feedback on the public toilets adjacent to the Playspace at Yokine Regional Open Space.  The City received valuable feedback from the community and this has informed the City’s plans to install new toilet amenities at a new location closer to the playspace at Yokine Regional Open Space.  Feedback from the community included comments regarding:

  • The number of toilets;

  • Their condition;

  • Type and style;

  • Location;

  • Opening times;

  • Safe access for children; and

  • They aren’t family friendly

The City has taken all feedback into consideration and is proposing to replace the existing toilet with a new public toilet facility in a new location which better services both playspace and reserve users. The proposed new toilet facility will be located closer to the playspace and will provide four (4) new public toilet amenities. Two are proposed to face the playspace and two to support reserve users. Two universally accessible and two ambulant toilets will be provided.  The toilet facilities will be accessible by all. The universally accessible toilets are larger and enable a more comfortable space for parents/carers to support younger children or those who need more support and will better accommodate access for prams.

Based on community feedback we have also considered the internal features and we are looking to include:

  • Change facilities suitable for babies and young children;

  • Hooks inside the toilet stall so handbags, nappy bags and other items can be kept off the ground;

  • Toilet seats;

  • Soap dispensers:
  • Well-lit and bright internal toilet space;

  • Facilities for everyone including those with disabilities needing extra support;

  • Location which maintains positive line of sight and natural surveillance;

  • Auto locking capabilities which enable opening times to be adjusted including earlier opening times in summer to accommodate morning users; and

  • Pet lead clips outside the toilets so users do not need to take their dog inside with them.

To improve the look of the toilet amenities and ensure they deliver a more modern design we are proposing to use a combination of concrete and fibre cement prefinished panelling for the finish of the toilet facility.

We have developed a sketch showing the proposed design and floor plan of the toilet facility. Please note the images and exact location are indicative and may change through the design process and following community feedback.

FAQs

Where are the existing public toilets on the reserve?

There are two locations for public toilets at Yokine Regional Open Space; at the Yokine Playspace and at the Yokine East Clubrooms.

How many toilet amenities are you planning to provide?

There will be 4 new toilets in total; 2 ambulant toilets and 2 Universally Accessible (UAT) toilets.

Where will you be locating the new toilet facility?

The community advised that better surveillance to the toilet facility from the playspace and also access for reserve users was important. The new toilet facility is planned to be located in front of the playspace and takes into consideration access to underground services.

What will they look like?

We are proposing to utilise a combination of concrete and fibre cement prefinished panelling for the design of the facility. Please refer to the gallery for futher images.

How will the design and location of the facility improve safety?

The new toilet facility will be located in front of playspace. Whilst considering existing underground services, this will cater to playspace and recreation users.

What time will the toilets be open and can you change the opening times?

Auto locking mechanisms will ensure we can support reserve users by providing us flexibility to change the opening and closing times during peak seasonal times whilst restricting access when the park is not expected to be utilised. Auto locking open times will be set to 6am to 9pm, however this can be changed to support reserve usage.

What fixtures are you planning to install within the toilets ?

  • Baby change tables
  • Bag hooks
  • Soap dispensers
  • Pet lead clips to attach your pet's lead to the clips provided on the exterior of the building so you no longer need to take them in with you.

How will you clean and maintain the toilets?

The on-going condition of the toilets will be monitored, and cleaning schedule adjusted to meet community needs.  CCTV will also be considered through the detailed design process.

When will the toilets be constructed and will you keep us informed?

Following community comment on the proposed design the City will finalise the design and then procure a builder to construct the facility.  The existing facility will be available during the construction of the new toilet facility.  Signage will be located at the reserve and the City’s project page updated to inform our community.

Will we have access to public toilets whilst you are building the new toilet facility?

The existing toilet facility will remain until the new facility is constructed and operational.  The existing facility will then be removed.
