Macaulay Park Improvements

Following community feedback, the City of Stirling will be improving the provision of recreational amenities to deliver a more active and vibrant Macaulay Park. The City is now progressing detailed designs with construction of stage one currently scheduled to commence in September 2024.

Based on community feedback we have made changes to the Concept Plan including:

  • Reduced the size of the basketball court to better align with the space and community feedback regarding potential noise concerns
  • Removed the under-pruning of trees from the plan
  • Reorientated the pathway near the basketball and fitness space
  • Updated the fitness zone and colour of the basketball surface to align with community outcomes
  • Reduced the size of the mulched area around the proposed nature play
  • Removed the proposed additional barbecue
  • The project will be delivered in 2024 except for the new and improved park lighting which will occur in 2025.

Construction of stage one is currently scheduled to commence in September 2024.

There will be onsite signage advising of the works and the City will also update this page with important updates

Community feedback round one

In December 2021 the City engaged with the local community to identify opportunities for the enhancement and activation of the park to better meet the need of all park users. This feedback has been vital in guiding and shaping the concept plan.

From the feedback received you told us that it’s important to provide a range of quality recreation experiences and that your top three ranked preferred amenities are an outdoor fitness zone, scooter path and 3-on-3 basketball. Feedback also highlighted the need for improvements to current play experiences and more barbecue facilities along with improved safety.

The City has taken on your feedback and is excited to share the proposed concept plan with you. We invite you to provide comments on the proposed upgrades and gain your views about the type of fitness equipment and the surface colour of the basketball court you would like to see.

The proposed new improvements include:

  • 3 on 3 basketball court
  • Outdoor fitness equipment/zone
  • Scooter and tricycle path
  • Nature play elements
  • New reserve lighting
  • Additional BBQ, new seating and tables.

Community feedback round two

In December 2023 - February 2024 the City shared the concept plan with the community durring round two feedback to explore what is important to the local park users. The City distributed letters to residents within 800m of the park and project signage invited the community to get involved and participate in drop-in sessions on Thursday 14 December 2023 and Thursday 18 January 2024.

Detailed outcomes of round two feedback can be found in the attached useful documents below.

FAQs

Why is the City looking to improve Macaulay Park?

The City received feedback from the Inglewood community that the existing recreational amenities at Macaulay Park have a primary focus on young children and that there is a need to provide better recreational opportunities to activate the reserve. As such, the City is looking to improve the provision of recreational amenities at Macaulay Park to better support the community’s needs.

What does the concept plan include?

Based on feedback from the community, the following amenities have been captured into a concept plan.

  • Outdoor fitness zone
  • Small scooter path
  • Two-toned basketball court with adjacent drinking fountain
  • Nature play
  • Additional and upgraded recreational path lighting
  • Additional bench seating
  • New picnic table.

Proposed locations of the above amenities are provided in the concept plan

What are the new key features of the park improvements identified on the concept?

Based on your feedback we have included a new basketball court, a new fitness zone, tricycle/scooter path, new nature play area, upgraded and new reserve lighting, new drink fountain to better support basketball users along with more seating and a picnic table.

Will the playground be upgraded?

The playground at Macaulay Park was upgraded in 2005 and is currently in good condition. It is due to be considered for renewal in 2026/27 pending ongoing condition inspections.

The community identified they would like to see more diverse play opportunities. We have included a new nature play area on the concept. The community will also be given a further opportunity to have their say on the playground upgrade when it is due for renewal.

Will there be additional park lighting installed? If so, does this extend the timing of use to later in the evening?

The existing lighting throughout the reserve will be improved.  Existing lighting will be upgraded, and new lighting will be installed. The exact location of the lights may change following the development of more detailed design from an electrical engineer.  The lighting project will be completed as a second stage in 2025 once the park recreational amenities have been installed.

Are you planting more trees?

Yes, more trees are planned to be planted around the reserve to improve shade, canopy cover and improve the parkland experience.  The community provided comment regarding a need to improve safety and sightlines around the reserve.

The original concept identified that the City would be undertaking selective underpruning to improve sightlines.  However, due to community concern over the perceived impact this may have on the vegetation cover at Macaulay Park, this has now been removed from the plan. The City will continue to monitor the vegetation and will undertake pruning on an as needs basis as part of its routine maintenance operations.

Outdoor basketball court location and design features

We have located the court, approximately 120 metres away from the closest residential property and we will be using a noise attenuating backboard.

We are installing a basketball court for recreational use. It will not be fenced and it will be free for the community to practice their basketball skills. The court area dimensions will be approximately 15m x 9m plus run off and will include a 3 point line. The area will not be lit for evening use.

Does the concept plan include water-play?

A number of requests were received for waterplay which will be considered as part of future playground renewal. The City is looking to balance providing better play experiences whilst ensuring we use our water resources wisely.

What colour basketball court and type of outdoor fitness equipment will be installed?

Determined by feedback outcomes, the community has chosen a two-toned basketball court surface and an outdoor fitness zone.

The fitness zone will provide a range of equipment which may include a step-up station, roman rings, sit up bench, gorilla bars, multi bench, leg raises and box jump equipment, body dip station and pull up bars. The type of exercise equipment, style and colour may be subject to change as the City progresses through detailed design.

How many trees will be removed?

At this time the proposed landscape works will not require the removal of any trees. A Quantified Tree Risk Assessment has been undertaken by a qualified arborist as part of the design development.  The recommended tree works will be undertaken by the City.

New tree planting is included as part of the landscape works, as identified on the concept plan.

When will the improvements be happening?

The next stage for the project is detailed design, with construction of stage one currently scheduled to commence in September 2024. There will be onsite signage advising of the works at the time.

What is included in the different stages of the works?

Stage one - all recreational improvements excluding pedestrian lighting.

Stage two- pedestrian lighting (pending budget approval by Council) including upgrade of existing lights and installation of new pole top lights to path network.
