Council adopted the Long Term Cycle Network on 17 November, 2020. It's objective is to provide a blueprint to ensure state and local governments work together towards the delivery of one continuous bicycle network, providing additional transport options, recreational opportunities, support for tourism and commercial activity, and creating a bicycle network catering for all ages and abilities.
The vision is for a network of safe and attractive bicycle routes:
- To provide continuous routes along major corridors
- To establish links between strategic, secondary, district, specialised activity centres and public transport services
- To provide connections to schools, education sites and local centres.
Perth already enjoys a good level of existing bicycle infrastructure, but we know we can make it even better by ensuring the network is integrated and continues to connect suburbs with one another.
The Department of Transport is working with 33 local government authorities in Perth and Peel to agree on bicycle routes that link parks, schools, community facilities and transport services, to make bike riding a convenient and viable option.

Are the designated cycling routes set in stone?
No the routes are aspirational and have been identified in their strong connections across Local Governments.
Will there be specific consultation on high level cycling routes as they become identified in short term planning?
Yes. As projects become viable and receive external funding consideration, the City will engage and collaborate with the community.
What is the extent of municipal funds for these projects?
The premise is that State funding will match Local government funding dollar for dollar.
What is the main focus area of the community for the long term cycling routes?
Typically we are looking at the average type of cyclist; one who can make some modal type transport changes to their travel.
Will the long term routes affect development opportunities?
Where possible the City will sensitively consider with our City planners the best sustainable transport options. These in turn should improve development opportunities by providing the community alternative good transport options.
