Chief Executive Officer recruitment

11 May 2023

The search for the next Chief Executive Officer of Western Australia’s largest local government by population is now underway following a Council decision at Tuesday’s meeting.

The executive search will attract significant interest from candidates locally, nationally and potentially internationally.

Mayor Mark Irwin said the tenure of outgoing City of Stirling CEO Stuart Jardine PSM had set a high bar of excellence, and the next CEO would need insight, tenacity and the ability to form strong professional relationships that benefit the City and its 234,000 residents.

“Under Stuart’s leadership, the City has become a sector-leader, regularly winning awards for excellence in the delivery of projects and services as well as being used as an exemplar in governance and planning by the State Government,” he said.

“This is a rare role suited to a leader who is keen to work closely with Council as it seeks to achieve the City’s vision to be a sustainable City with a local focus. The successful applicant will join a high-performing executive team to lead the City into the future.

“This opportunity will attract experienced, contemporary and strategic-minded leaders.

“The City of Stirling is ahead of the game in innovation, service delivery and community focus, as evidenced by our recent customer satisfaction score of 94 per cent – our highest ever rating.”

The Mayor added that Council expected the successful applicant to have extensive experience in an executive management position in the local government or public sector (or related commercial organisation equivalent) with demonstrated expertise in successfully developing and implementing strategic and operational plans.

The recruitment process will be conducted in line with the relevant legislation, and is expected to conclude in August 2023. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will join the City by the end of 2023, which will enable a smooth transition and handover before the end of Stuart Jardine’s term in April 2024.

“On behalf of Council, I’d like to thank you, Stuart, for your outstanding commitment, leadership, support and friendship during your impressive tenure as CEO,” said Mayor Mark Irwin.
