City congratulates former Deputy Mayor turned Minister

07 June 2023

The City of Stirling welcomes the appointment of our former Deputy Mayor and Councillor, Hon David Michael MLA, as the newest Cabinet minister in the Cook State Government.

Hon David Michael MLA served as Cabinet Secretary in the 2021 McGowan Government, and has today been appointed Minister for Ports, Local Government and Road Safety. He will also be Minister Assisting the new Deputy Premier, Hon Rita Saffioti MLA, alongside Mirrabooka MLA Meredith Hammat.

Prior to being elected as the local Member for Balcatta in 2017, Minister Michael was a City of Stirling Councillor for 12 years and spent two of those years serving as the City’s Deputy Mayor. To this day he remains the youngest person in the City’s history to be elected to Council, having joined at the age of 25.

Mayor Mark Irwin today thanked Hon John Carey MLA for his service as outgoing Minister for Local Government, and warmly congratulated the new Minister for Local Government on his appointment.

“On behalf of all Councillors I warmly welcome David’s appointment to the Cook/Saffioti ministry,” he said.

“David Michael is a hard-working local Member for Balcatta, and the City has always had a very strong and close working relationship with him. During his 12 years as a City of Stirling Councillor and Deputy Mayor, he excelled in service to the local community, and has brought all of that local knowledge and character to his roles in the State Parliament.

“I also take this opportunity to congratulate Hon Roger Cook MLA on his appointment as Premier, and Hon Rita Saffioti MLA – who the City has worked closely with on many major infrastructure initiatives – on her appointment as Deputy Premier and Treasurer.

“We have now had two Ministers for Local Government in a row who were either former Councillors, Deputy Mayors and/or Mayors, and we look forward to an even closer and more collaborative relationship with the State Government with the depth of knowledge Minister Michael brings.

“Local members representing the residents of the City of Stirling now hold portfolios across Local Government, Ports, Road Safety, Health and Mental Health, or are assisting either the Premier, Deputy Premier, Cabinet itself, or the Minister for Education, Aboriginal Affairs, Citizenship and Multicultural Interests. This reflects the City’s status not only as WA’s largest local government by population but also our cultural and economic significance as the most multicultural community and second CBD of Perth.”

The City recognises and congratulates local Members for Morley, Kingsley, Mirrabooka and Mount Lawley on their new positions and continuing service:

  • Hon Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA – Minister for Health and Mental Health
  • Mrs Jessica Stojkovski MLA – Cabinet Secretary and Minister Assisting Hon Roger Cook MLA
  • Ms Meredith Hammat MLA – Assisting the Ministers Hon Rita Saffioti MLA and Hon Dr Tony Buti MLA
  • Mr Simon Millman MLA – Assisting the Minister Hon Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA.
