Key sporting and community upgrades completed

The City of Stirling will end the first quarter of the calendar year having completed several major sporting and community upgrade projects, bringing much-needed renewal to key facilities.

The clubroom upgrade works at Princess Wallington Reserve were completed in February, with the facilities now supporting year-round cricket, ensuring future growth of the club through the introduction of female cricket and junior teams.

Club President Dave Fernandez said the executive and membership of Cavaliers Cricket Club (formally known as Balga Cricket Club), thanked contractors for the fantastic work done in completing our clubroom renovations.

“These improvements make playing at this great club an even more enjoyable experience and gives visiting teams a touch of envy,” he said.

“I think apart from the obvious freshness of the facility, it allows for a more pleasant environment and greater usability and we can't wait to make full use of it.”

The works internally included the provision of two new unisex team changerooms, umpires changeroom, male toilets, female toilets, a universal access toilet, an office and a new commercial grade kitchen. Externally, the building and roof was repainted, new accessible pathway installed, and sewer pump station upgraded.

Earlier in January, internal refurbishment works on the Nollamara Community Centre were completed, including resurfacing the hardwood auditorium flooring, Op Shop and Store fit outs, painting, security lighting and fence removal to allow ease of access to the public.

Both projects were fully funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).

On 22 May 2020, the Australian Government announced a new $500 million Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI Program). Through the 2020–21 Budget, the Australian Government announced a $1 billion extension of the LRCI Program.

The program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Federal Member for Stirling, Vince Connelly MP, said that he was thrilled that the Federal Government was able to support clubroom upgrade works at Princess Wallington Reserve.

“As a father with two daughters who play sport, I know just how important it is to have adequate facilities for females at local sporting clubs,” he said.

“The government understands that when you invest in local infrastructure projects, you’re investing in local workers and businesses. As we emerge from COVID-19, it’s projects like these that will support the local economy and drive our recovery.”
