Men’s Health Week 2022

14 June 2022

Men's Health Week is celebrated every year around the world in the middle of June, held from 13 – 19 June 2022. It presents an important opportunity to highlight the importance of men's health, and to promote and support the health and wellbeing of men and boys in our communities.

Men's Health Week focusses on not just physical health, but also men's mental health and emotional wellbeing. This week highlights the health challenges faced by men in Australia and worldwide and explores how to improve the physical, emotional and mental health of men and boys.

The theme of Men's Health Week 2022 is Building Healthy Environments for Men and Boys – focussing on creating physically, mentally and emotionally healthy environments in the home, workplace and in social settings.

There are various events occurring across Perth this week, including:

  • Men’s Talk webinars (Monday – Thursday 6.30pm)

These webinars feature conversations on fatherhood, men’s heart health, men’s mental health and prostate cancer. These free seminars are available to attend in person at Synkro Wellness Centre (Level 1, Karrinyup Shopping Centre) or you can watch online.

  • Men’s Health Week Sundowner (5.00pm – 8.00pm Friday 17 June)

In addition to its webinar series, Men’s Talk is running its flagship event – The Men’s Health Week Sundowner – in partnership with Men’s Health and Wellbeing WA. The event features guest speakers, finger food, refreshments and lots of surprises. The event will be hosted by the new Synkro Wellness Centre at the Karrinyup Shopping Centre.

Speakers:

  • Stuart Aubrey – MLA for Scarborough
  • James Wild – CEO Men's Sheds of WA
  • Len Yarran – Co Chair Wadjak Northside Aboriginal Community Group

Register for the sundowner.

This Men’s Health Week, the City is also encouraging the male members of our community to take advantage of the services and programs offered by the City to encourage a healthy lifestyle, such as:

The City of Stirling also supports men’s mental health through the Stirling Community Men’s Shed in Balcatta, one of the first Men’s Sheds in the northern Perth metropolitan area. The facility opened in August 2011 and was made possible with the support of a Lotterywest Grant, funding from the Department of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Since then, Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed (run by the Rotary Club of Karrinyup) has also been established within the City of Stirling. It has become a popular facility in the community, supporting significant social and mental health benefits by creating a space for men to build connections through shared experiences on a range of physical tasks and projects.

The City of Stirling aims to support men in our community by welcoming dads and grandads with open arms to our Stirling Libraries programs for early and family literacy, including Saturday Songs and Stories, Baby Rhymetime and Storytime and Learning English Through Storytime.

Recognising the importance of men’s mental health, the City has supported the Swim For Life fundraiser hosted at Scarborough Beach Pool by not-for-profit group Men’s Talk in recent years. From 26-27 November 2022, the event will return for its fourth year to raise awareness for the prevention of male suicide. Registrations for the 2022 event will open in mid-late June - follow Men's Talk on Facebook for details.
