Terry Tyzack indoor refurbishments complete

The indoor pool area of the Stirling Leisure Centres – Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre has reopened after Stage 1 of the major refurbishment works were completed earlier this week.

Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre is conveniently located in Inglewood and offers a 500m2 gym with cardio, strength and free weights equipment; more than 90 group fitness classes per week; a sauna and spa; a heated 25m indoor leisure pool; and a heated 50m outdoor pool.

Earlier this month the City announced the completion of another major strategic project – the works at Moyle Pavilion and Hamer Park – and today’s announcement marks yet another major project delivered by the City.

The works involved retiling the internal pool concourse and reception area, major refurbishment of the indoor pools, upgrade of the indoor pool plant, changerooms and spa area as well as LED lighting improvement, in what was the first major refurbishment of the indoor facility since it opened in 2001.

Mayor Mark Irwin said that the reopening was an important milestone in the history of the facility and would provide a higher quality service for local residents.

“Having opened in 2001, Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre has been in need of major works for some time and so the delivery of Stage 1 on time and on budget is a big moment for the local community,” he said.

“Over the last six months or so works have included the replacement of all tiling of the pool walkways, the indoor leisure pool and 25m indoor pool, a pool plant upgrade, refurbishment of the changerooms, installation of energy efficient lighting and, of course, a fresh coat of paint.

“This project could not have proceeded without the support of the Federal Government, with $1.6 million provided toward the project from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).”

Western Australian Senator Dean Smith said he was pleased the Federal Government was able to support the indoor refurbishments at Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre.

“This project is another great example of how our COVID-19 stimulus measures have benefitted the northern suburbs,” Senator Smith said.

“Supporting local councils at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic has provided certainty and stability, allowing them to deliver priority road and community infrastructure projects.

“It is great to see the completion of the refurbishments at Terry Tyzack – a project that both supports the local economy and improves the recreational experience of the local community.”

The LRCI program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As we consider our budget for 2022/23, we will be looking to support the works required as part of Stage 2 of the redevelopment, including a state-of-the-art L-shaped 10 lane 50m plus 4 lane 25m outdoor pool, an outdoor plant room upgrade, submersible swim wall, an accessible ramp, landscaping with new LED lighting and water polo features,” Mayor Irwin said.

In September 2021 the City awarded the tender for Terry Tyzack internal refurbishment works to AE Hoskins Building Services, a local Balcatta-based all-trade building services provider who also recently completed works for the City on the Balga Cricket Club.

The contractor described the works as an exciting overhaul at a well-known, well-loved aquatic centre.
