Naala Djookan named runners up

11 October 2021

The 2021 Local Government Professionals WA recently celebrated and honoured community development professionals who have achieved outstanding outcomes for their local communities.

The City of Stirling is proud to announce that Naala Djookan Healing Centre was awarded joint runners up in the Innovative Partnership Award, alongside the City of Swan.

The City of Stirling, along with ten other organisations, formed a partnership in 2020 to create Naala Djookan Healing Centre. The centre delivers an integrated, specialist service that supports women, children, and families at risk of or experiencing family and domestic violence (FDV) to access support and assistance required to promote safe, healthy relationships and overall wellbeing.

The City is the lead organisation for the partnership group, which means the City takes overall responsibility for the coordination of the centre. The partnership group was initiated when the City tendered for the State Government grant to establish a FDV One Stop Hub in Mirrabooka.

Mayor Mark Irwin said excellent outcomes for the community have been achieved in the first six months of operation of Naala Djookan Healing Centre (December 2020 – June 2021).

“The centre has delivered 18 different health and wellbeing programs, totalling 69 workshops with 315 participants. Additionally, 135 clients have accessed FDV support services,” he said.

“While Naala Djookan Healing Centre is accessible for all women, a priority focus is to engage with and support women, children, and families who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally and linguistically diverse.

“The City has supported community members experiencing family and domestic violence for more than 40 years through the Stirling Women’s Centre, the first purpose-built refuge in WA, and the Healing Centre’s recent award shows it already has a bright future ahead.

“I want to congratulate all the employees and volunteers that are involved in making the Healing Centre work.”

Award winners were announced during the 2021 Community Development Conference dinner, with the dinner theme 'Colours of the rainbow' being reflective of the diverse range of topics covered by the award nominations.
