Artists Shortlisted Ahead Of 2021 Awards And Exhibition

22 October 2021

160 artists have been shortlisted this past week for the City of Stirling’s biennial Art Awards and Exhibition 2021, including painted, sculptural, drawn, mixed media and digital works which will be on display for the public to view and purchase in two weeks’ time.

The judging panel – made up of Sandra Murray (independent curator), Dr Paul Uhlmann (Coordinator of Visual Arts, School of Arts and Humanities, Edith Cowan University) and Lee Kinsella (Curator – Cruthers Collection, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery) – will now deliberate ahead of the award presentation event on Thursday 28 October.

Seven prizes will be awarded from the $15,000+ prize pool, including the $7,500 Acquisitive Prize and the new City of Stirling 50th Anniversary ‘Local Visions’ Award – featuring people or places within the City’s boundaries.

Mayor Mark Irwin said as the anticipation for artists grows ahead of the award presentation event, the public anticipation is also growing before the opening of the exhibition, which this year includes extra programming events and workshops.

“Whilst the awards night for artists is an important component of this biennial Art Awards and Exhibition, what really excites me is the opportunity it gives for the public to engage with art,” he said.

“Art is intended to be seen by others, to say something about the artist and the world around them, to express universal feelings and emotions, and to connect people.

“This year, thousands are expected to attend the exhibition at the City’s Civic Reception Hall, which will open between 10.00am and 4.00pm daily from Friday 29 October through Sunday 7 November.

“The 10-day exhibition will now also include artist demonstrations in the Open Studio event from Friday 29 October through Monday 1 November, Tactile Tours, a local artist networking event on Wednesday 3 November, and a youth event dubbed ‘Dardy Digital’ on Saturday 6 November.

“Whilst the public engages with the work of our wonderful artists, they are encouraged to vote for the Westfield People’s Choice Award, with the final award winner announced on Monday 8 November.

“For the first time, we are thrilled to announce that there will be no commissions involved in the sale of art to the public; 100 per cent of sales will go directly to the artists in recognition of the financial impact the last 18 months have had on the artistic industry.”

The only exception to the public opportunity to purchase the art is that of the prestigious Acquisitive Award winner, which is automatically acquired into the City of Stirling’s Art Collection.

The 2021 Art Awards and Exhibition would not be possible without the local supporters of the event, including Barrett Exhibition Group, the Rotary Club of Karrinyup, Westfield Innaloo and Jackson Drawing Supplies.
