Second trial for Churchlands Green

The City is currently undertaking a second trial to reduce traffic management issues through Churchlands Green Estate.

In 2020, residents were asked to comment on a proposal to address traffic management issues, with options later provided to the community for feedback.

After the consultation period, Council supported the majority view of residents within Churchlands Green to proceed with a trial. This included left turn temporary closures at the intersections of Alumni Terrace/Pearson Street, University Avenue/Empire Avenue and a right turn ban from University Avenue into Alumni Terrace. 

Since the trial started in July 2020, the City has been collecting regular traffic data to measure the impacts on the local road network over the course of the trial. In addition to the traffic data, the City asked for community feedback about the trial. The intention was for Council to consider a report on the performance of the trial after it had concluded to establish if the modifications should be made permanent, taking community feedback into account.

On 30 March, City of Stirling Council decided to implement an additional trial of right turn restrictions at two key intersections - the intersection of Pearson Street and Alumni Terrace, and the intersection of Empire Avenue and University Avenue.

Council considered various issues when making its decision, including:

• the potential benefits of reducing the volume of non-local traffic through the Churchlands Green subdivision; principally through University Avenue and Alumni Terrace
• the positive and negative impacts of the recent trials, including the high number of illegal left turns
• extensive community feedback.

The additional trial will be completed across two phases, with the first phase to begin on 26 May 2021. It will involve:

• All temporary traffic management will come down at the intersection of Pearson Street and Alumni Terrace, and the intersection of Empire Avenue and University Avenue with a temporary no right turn from Pearson Street onto Alumni Terrace for six weeks.

Updates on the second phase of the trial, including the temporary no right turn onto University Avenue from Empire Avenue, will be provided in late May 2021.
