Proposed amendments to Inglewood Character Retention Guidelines

Since late 2019, Council and the City’s officers have been considering whether the Inglewood Character Retention Guidelines are suitable or whether they need to change to introduce design flexibility.

To do this, in September 2020 we engaged with the community through an online survey to understand if there was support for the City to investigate changes to the Guidelines, while at the same time preserving the character of the area. A community workshop was held in March 2021 which informed recommended changes to the Guidelines.

At its meeting on 25 May 2021 Council considered recommended changes to the Guidelines as they apply to Inglewood only. Council supported the proposed changes so they can be advertised for public comment. Key changes in the Guidelines include:

  • Defining ‘Character Street’ - identifies parts of the suburb where different controls will apply
  • Introducing different levels of control for different parts of a lot – in order to allow design flexibility while preserving the character of the area, different controls are recommended for different parts of a lot
  • Development facing laneways - design flexibility is recommended for these lots, but development will still have to reference the character of the area
  • Solar panels - it is recommended these be allowed facing the street, without the need for approval.

You are able to provide comment on the Guidelines from Monday 7 June 2021 until Monday 28 June 2021. A community drop-in session will also be held at the Inglewood Community Centre on Saturday 12 June 2021 9.30am to 12.30pm. This session will give the community the opportunity to ask the City questions about the policy.
