New community food garden proposed for coastal suburb

25 January 2021

Charles Riley Memorial Reserve in North Beach could be home to a new community food garden.

A group of residents from the suburb hopes to transform an underused part of the reserve – near the North Beach Tennis Club courts – into a thriving garden for fresh fruit and vegetables.

Along with growing fresh food, community gardens are places where people can come together to learn new skills and make new friends. Community food gardens typically take shape on public land and are run, maintained and used by the community.

To ensure the community has a say on the North Beach proposal, the City has organised a meet and greet session at the proposed site (enter the reserve off Kitchener Street) on Saturday 13 February 2021 from 3.30pm to 5.00pm.

A short online survey is also now available on the City's website for the community to comment on the proposal. The survey closes Monday 22 February 2021.

Mayor Mark Irwin said there was already considerable interest from local residents to establish a food garden in North Beach and he looked forward to hearing the community’s views on the proposal.

“We are very supportive of establishing community food gardens across the City, as they can provide a great social outlet for residents and everyone who looks after the gardens gets the benefit of enjoying some fresh produce after their hard work,” Mayor Irwin said.

“We also want to make sure that community food gardens operate in the right locations, so we’re encouraging as many people as possible to share their thoughts with us on this latest proposal.”

There are already several other community food gardens operating in the City of Stirling, from Hamersley across to Inglewood.

In addition, the City has supported many school-based food gardens over the years in suburbs such as Coolbinia, Westminster, Nollamara, Wembley Downs and North Beach.
