COVID-19 update – Face mask mandate for Perth and Peel

23 December 2021

The Premier Mark McGowan MLA has announced today that a single COVID-19 case has been detected in the community, which will require an indoor face mask mandate and cancellation of major public events.

From 6pm tonight, until at least 6am Tuesday December 28, the following rules will apply across Perth and Peel:

  • Face masks will be mandatory in all public indoor settings, including workplaces, shopping centres, hospitality venues and public transport
  • The face mask mandate will not apply to the home, and will not apply for people doing vigorous indoor exercise
  • Face masks are recommended to be worn outside when you cannot physically distance - people are urged to use common sense
  • High risk, large public events like music festivals will be cancelled during this period and all nightclubs will be closed - all dancing will be banned, except for weddings
  • In addition, the face mask rules will also apply to anyone who has been in Perth or Peel since Thursday, 16 December and are now located in a different part of the State.

A number of potential exposure sites have been identified across Perth, including in Mirrabooka, Joondalup, Girrawheen, Perth and the CBD, Subiaco, Northbridge, and Scarborough – with more likely to be identified in the coming days.

A comprehensive list can be found here with all the specific exposure dates and times.

If you have been to any of the exposure sites – or if you are feeling unwell – it is important to get tested.
Clinics are in the process of being ramped up. They will stay open tonight until 10pm, and will keep operating throughout Christmas and Boxing Day.

Scarborough Sunset Markets, scheduled for this evening, have been cancelled in line with the Health advice.

Mayor Mark Irwin said whilst this was not the news we wanted to hear two days before Christmas, the City of Stirling was aware of the reality of COVID-19 and prepared to comply with the mandate.

“Public health measures such as social distancing, the wearing of face masks, sanitising of hands and managing the density in indoor gatherings have always been our first line of defence,” he said.

“This time around, we have a community-wide double vaccination rate in the mid-80 per cent range for people over the age of 12, which puts us in a much stronger position than in previous situations.

“Given the large number of exposure sites across the City of Stirling especially in Mirrabooka and Scarborough, I urge every resident to check the exposure site list regularly and follow the health advice to get tested and isolate until you have a negative result.

“There are vulnerable members of our community and families that, even if vaccinated, still need our help to manage this situation, and the last thing I’d want to give my family at Christmas is COVID-19, and I am sure everyone else feels the same way.

“This is a strong but measured response to a very real threat, and as we have done so many times in the past, we will get through this together too.”

The City will continue to monitor State Government advice in the coming days. All updates can be found on our dedicated COVID-19 page, as well as on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
