City responds to COVID-19 lockdown

23 April 2021

Following the announcement by Premier Mark McGowan that the Perth and Peel region will go into a three-day lockdown, the City will suspend all non-essential services from midnight Friday 23 April until 12.01am Tuesday 27 April.

The City’s priority is the health and wellbeing of our employees and the community, as well as continuing to deliver essential services where we can.

The City has re-activated our pre-prepared COVID-19 Lockdown Action Plan to enable a clear, informed and immediate response.

During lockdown, the City will continue to offer essential services to the community per the usual schedule:

  • Domestic kerbside bin collection (on weekdays)
  • Ranger and security services
  • Beach patrol services
  • Customer contact centre (phone only)
  • Aged care services (including Meals on Wheels, personal care and emergency transport only)
  • Crisis accommodation
  • Reactive road, building and parks maintenance
  • Building inspections.

Any services outside of this list will not be operating during lockdown.

City employees working during the lockdown will adopt strict COVID-19 workplace practices, including the wearing of masks and physical distancing.

In line with the State Government advice, the following City facilities and services will be suspended during the lockdown period:

  • The City’s Administration Centre although the Customer Contact Centre remains available via phone (9205 8555)
  • All City libraries (Osborne Park, Mirrabooka, Dianella, Inglewood, Karrinyup and Scarborough)
  • All loans will be automatically extended and no fines will apply
  • All City leisure centres (Terry Tyzack Aquatic Centre, Leisurepark Balga, Hamersley, Herb Graham Mirrabooka, Scarborough and Scarborough Beach Pool)
  • All of the City’s community centres and venues for hire (with the exception of weddings and funerals, up to 100 people)
  • All City events, including events and bookings at our facilities (with the exception of weddings and funerals up to 100 people)
  • Playgrounds, outdoor exercise equipment, fenced dog parks and skate parks.

Pending further advice from the State Government over the long weekend, the City will provide an update about the Ordinary Council Meeting scheduled for Tuesday 27 April.

Per State Government advice, all Anzac Day services are cancelled and community members are encouraged to commemorate Anzac Day with a driveway dawn service.

The Recycling Centre Balcatta will be closed. The Containers for Change Refund Centre at 257 Balcatta Road is closed until further notice.

The City will continue to closely monitor State Government advice and communicate information regularly through our Facebook page and COVID-19 webpage as the situation develops.

Mayor Mark Irwin said while the snap lockdown may be unsettling, the City was prepared to continue offering essential services wherever possible.

“It is unfortunate that we find ourselves in lockdown again, however the resilience of our community has been proven time and time again,” he said.

“I strongly encourage everyone to keep the Anzac spirit alive by standing at the end of your driveway or balcony this Anzac Day to remember all Australians, past and present, who served and died in war and operational service. It is important to reflect on the sacrifice those men and women made to allow us the freedom and quality of life we enjoy today.

“Please stay safe, look after one another and only leave the house for essential reasons.

“If you must leave the house for one of the four essential reasons, wear a mask, always use the SafeWA App or contact registers, stay in your neighbourhood and consider supporting an independent small business.”

To keep your mind and body active and healthy this long weekend, the City has a range of services you can access from the comfort and safety of your home, including our At Home Wellness video series and our extensive digital library.
