Update on works to protect the Stirling coastline

23 November 2020

With coastal erosion continuing to affect our local coastal areas, the City has moved ahead with works to help protect and preserve Mettams Pool in North Beach and the Watermans Bay coastline as well as access to Trigg Beach.

Mettams Pool

The City has carried out repairs to the main stairs (adjacent to the public toilets) by affixing them to rock below. The stairs reopened to the public in late October 2020.

While the stairs remained structurally sound, the repairs were considered an appropriate measure until they are replaced with a new ramp down to the beach.

The City is currently in the design phase for the new ramp and it expected the related works will be advertised for tender early next year.

Once built, the ramp will offer better access for the public and will serve as the primary access point for the toilet block. The City plans to remove the existing stairs when the new ramp is completed. It is anticipated the new ramp will in place by mid-2021.

Watermans Bay

Ongoing efforts to safeguard coastline areas in Watermans Bay have continued for more than a decade including the introduction of a ‘soft rock’ seawall using Geotextile Sand Containers (GSC).

Most recently, the City arranged for a contractor to repair the GSCs following damage sustained after a fierce storm lashed the coast in May 2020. Repairs to the GSCs were completed in October.

This financial year, the City will invest more than $600,000 in coastal erosion treatments and this information outlines the immediate actions planned to address the current impacts of coastal erosion at Mettams Pool and Watermans Bay.

Trigg

Repairs are underway to the popular ‘zig zag’ ramp near Jim Clarko Reserve that leads down to the beach.

The City is carrying out works to strengthen the foundations of the ramp after this year’s winter storms washed away portions of sand underneath.

As well as adding more sand under the ramp, works to reconstruct and strengthen the ramp’s landing section are going ahead. The ramp will reopen to the public on Thursday 25 November 2020.
